Ceramic Coated vs. Stainless Steel exhaust systems... The Debate is over!

Here at Pypes, our staff often recieves inquiries concerning upgrading from our high quality, aluminized exhaust systems to ceramic coated or stainless steel systems. When comparing Pypes aluminum ceramic coated and stainless systems, we like to divide our discussions into two distinct catagories: Performance- How it works andAesthetics - How it looks. Our extensive testing and research has led us to the following conclusions: Performance: How it works. Heat equals Efficiency ...it’s that simple... The practice and theory of using ceramics to insulate and protect exhaust systems is usually overlooked. We all know that heat is generated in the combustion chamber, but as emission gases escape from the exhaust ports through the headers or manifolds, they begin to cool, and when the gases cool, they slow down. Using Pypes aluminum ceramic coatings on exhaust components helps to maintain the velocity of the gases by keeping the heat within the components. Gases move through the system faster, which reduces back pressure and increases through-put. This increase in efficiency translates into more horsepower that is generated by managing the exhaust system’s heat in a much better way than stainless systems can. Since the ceramic coating keeps the heat where it does the most good,…inside the component, the surface temperature of the components are reduced and the rest of your vehicle is cooler than those with stainless components. Fit and Finish Stainless pipe is much harder to bend! It is a fact that there are more fit problems with stainless vs cold rolled steel! Contrary to popular belief, ceramic coatings containing aluminum are highly resistant to chipping and cracking. We use the same aluminum ceramic coating that was developed to be used in jet engine turbines. Our ceramic coatings remain flexible over the long run and are extremely durable. Stainless lasts a lifetime? True, 304 stainless will never rust, but because most of our piping is coated both inside and out, your Pypes system will last the lifetime of your vehicle. Aesthetics: How it looks. Ceramic Coating looks better longer... no doubt about it! Our polished ceramic coatings resist discoloration and tarnishing…stainless steel does not. Over the shortest and longest periods of time, our polished coatings out-perform stainless steel in the “good looks” department. In the short run, within a week after installation, stainless exhaust systems will begin to discolor and lose their luster. They will take on a dull, almost brownish tone and maintain that tone for the life of the system. Even at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit (average exhaust system temperatures run 500-600 degrees), polished ceramic coated systems will maintain their glow for years to come. Whether you install a ceramic system on a daily driver, show or race car, it will look better longer. Take a trip through the mud or over the red carpet, your ceramic coated exhaust system will maintain a longer lasting, bright appearance. After reading this you would expect to pay a substantial premium for our polished ceramic products. Rather, you will find that our ceramic upgrades cost no more than stainless exhaust systems. The Ceramic Coated system in the following pictures was installed 4 months ago and the Mustang has been driven nearly every day since then. It hasn't been washed yet so you can see that (aside from a little dirt) the ceramic system is still shiny and looking great.
